Watching porn regularly is a reality for teenagers, but one that parents often deny. While 90% of minors admit to watching porn, 90% of parents claim that their children do not. They actively deny that the kid they catch absorbed in their room with a phone in hand could be watching anything other than a documentary, despite surveys among the younger population indicating otherwise. The consequence of this denial? They won’t talk to their kids, who will then grow up believing that porn is sex because that’s what social media, their main source of sexual education, leads them to believe.
In the face of this reality, the Spanish Ministry of Equality has just launched the campaign #Letstalkaboutpornography, which urges, especially parents, to talk to minors about how pornography is not sex but violence (“90% of the porn accessed by young people has real violent content,” explains Aina Calvo, Secretary of State for Equality and against Gender Violence).
70% of teenagers access pornography online involuntarily
In the same vein, Minister Ana Redondo has made a call to talk to minors because it is the best way to protect them. 70% of teenagers access pornography online involuntarily, something that both Spanish and European authorities are working on, although they have not yet found a way to prevent minors from accessing pornography.
The conversation, furthermore, must be started soon, as access to pornography is advancing. How much? Children are already watching pornography at the age of 8. 25% before the age of 13, with the average age being 14. The cause of the infantilization of pornography is the easy access from smartphones and its free availability.
30% of men admit to being addicted to pornography, which in 90% of cases is violent
This is indicated by the research New pornography and changes in interpersonal relationships, carried out by the University of the Balearic Islands and the Youth and Inclusion Network, the first to provide verified numbers to a reality that is spreading and has serious consequences. One of the most serious consequences is the sharp increase in macho behaviors among adolescents, with the predominant role of the male, his domination, and the woman seen as a mere sexual object that enjoys humiliation. Not in vain, the consumption of porn is predominantly a male and heterosexual practice. And 30% acknowledge being addicted to it.
