ABSTRACT
The progressive evolution of mass media exerts influence on our everyday lives in any possible circumstances. In this context also the possibilities for distribution of pornography experienced an enormous upswing. The accessibility through computers and smartphones is nowadays easier than ever before and juridical regulations as well as restrictions are impossible to implement. Future generations will sooner or later, intentionally or not, get in touch with pornography, which is even today a very important subject for male adolescents in particular. Simultaneously, pornographic contents raise suspicion to exert some sort of pressure to be perfect and to represent unbalanced gender relations. It seems all the more important to study pornography and to show possible correlations between the consumption of pornography and gender stereotypes as well as subjective self-worth.In the empirical study an online questionnaire about consumption habits and sexual behaviour was filled in by 130 young adults between 18 and 30 years. They also answered questions measuring sexist attitudes and subjective appraisal of their self-worth. The empirical evidence shows especially gender differences concerning consumption habits of pornography as well as self-worth. While there are less accurate coherences of female pornography consumption habits, males could feel possible influences in their sex-life, because of an higher pornography consumption frequency. The pornography consumption habits of men are correlating negatively with the reported frequency of sexual intercourse and ratings of their sexual life.
