Abstract

Investigated 4 factors that can play a role in the commission of sexual offenses by adolescent boys: sexually explicit material, substance abuse, and sexual or physical victimization. 160 adolescent males (mean age 15.4 yrs), most of whom had been charged with or convicted of a sexual crime, participated in an interview survey. The most frequently used sexually explicit materials were magazines and videotapes. Ss who consumed alcohol had a higher number of victims than those who did not, and those who reported that alcohol increased their arousal had the most victims. Sexually or physically abused Ss had more victims than those who had not been abused. Most Ss reported that sexually explicit materials played no role in their crimes.

FINDING – Juvenile sex offenders were questioned about their use of sexually explicit material. Only 11% said they did not use sexually explicit material. Of those who used the material, 74% said it increased their sexual arousal.
